5 Tools to End the Comparison Game

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” This quote is attributed to C.S. Lewis, Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, and a handful of others. While the exact author is unknown, the quote still holds.

I’ve been discussing “comparison” with a few clients recently. Do you find yourself constantly comparing yourself to others? Physically, financially, as a parent, or even lover? It is easier than ever in today’s world to set ourselves up against unrealistic expectations. Social media shows us only the curated perfect moments in people’s lives. We never see the true story. For example, those abs on the fitness model could be the product of an eating disorder. The travel blogger that appears to have a perfect life could be suffering from relationship issues. The family with the ideal house and nice cars could be swimming in debt just trying to stay afloat.

You see, we’ve created unrealistic expectations in our lives that everything must be perfect. If we see everyone else having perfect lives, why don’t we have one? In reality, this is bullshit! Nobody has a perfect life and everyone is dealing with something. Some people use social media and other outlets to build themselves up. Some people close off and drink themselves to sleep every night. Life is filled with ups and downs. If you’re constantly comparing yourself to the false reality others portray, you’re only going to make it harder.

How can you stop this negative feedback loop? Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Take a break from social media. You can join me as I take my friend, True Core Health’s, challenge to get off all social media on the weekends during October.

  • When comparison and negative stories build, get moving. Moving the body is a great way to shut off the mind.

  • Spend time with your friends in person. Real conversations trump online. It allows us to read non-verbal cues and connect on a different level.

  • Realize you are not alone. We’re all just trying to make it in this world; use the tools you have available to re-work the comparing mind. Do more of what makes you feel good and less of the things that make you feel awful.

  • Stop consuming and create. Whatever you are holding off doing, start now.

While it can be hard to stop the comparison game, it will significantly improve your inner being. Remember, have a little compassion for yourself. Celebrate your small wins and keep moving forward. Don’t let unrealistic stories drive your emotions or your actions.
